Simpler Interior Finishing

Flat-faced 8"×8" timbers give your interior trades a straight working surface. Drywall returns, cabinetry, and trim meet a flat wall — not a curved log. That difference saves weeks of skilled labour and thousands in finishing costs compared to round-log construction.

Mountain Modern Aesthetic

Clean lines pair naturally with concrete countertops, steel fixtures, and expansive glass — the contemporary-rustic style BC architects are building toward. Round logs resist modern finishes. Square timber invites them.

DIY-Friendly Assembly

Box-joint corners interlock for fast on-site assembly — no specialist log-building skills required. Owner-builders with basic construction knowledge can raise the shell themselves. Time is money, especially in BC's demanding build environments.

Consistent Quality, Every Kit

Every kit ships the same bill of materials — same timber dimensions, same corner system, same truss design. Whether building on Vancouver Island or hiring a crew in the Okanagan, you work from the same drawings.

Western Hemlock Timber

Naturally high tannin content provides inherent pest and rot resistance without chemical treatment. Tighter grain and greater dimensional stability than spruce or pine — well suited to BC's high humidity and coastal climate conditions.

BC Code-Compliant

Every kit ships with construction drawings and a Hot2000 energy model report. A BC-licensed structural engineer reviews and stamps all drawings for local compliance under the BC Building Code.

Total Build Cost

What a complete home costs
to build in British Columbia.

EcoLog supplies the shell kit. Everything beyond is up to you. Here's what to budget so there are no surprises.

Talk to us about your budget →
Build Tier Cost / sq ft Example: 1,500 sq ft Typical Scope
Rural Standard$200 – $250$300K – $375KAcreage, slab-on-grade, standard finishes
Mid-Range (Sweet Spot)$250 – $320$375K – $480KKit + standard build and finishes — most buyers land here
Custom / Premium$320 – $450$480K – $675KHigh-end finishes, full basement, custom details
Luxury / Showcase$450 – $600$675K – $900KPremium location, all features, designer finishes
How to read these numbers: The EcoLog shell kit is one component of the total project cost. Everything else — shipping from our facility, foundation, shell assembly, mechanical/electrical/plumbing, and interior and exterior finishing — is handled by you, whether DIY or through a contractor. Owner-builders who do their own shell assembly can land at the lower end of these ranges. Land costs are separate. Interior BC and remote sites typically carry a 15–25% access premium; coastal areas may see higher labour costs.

Does an EcoLog kit meet the BC Building Code?
Yes — fully compliant, not "should be fine." British Columbia uses the BC Building Code 2024, which incorporates the National Building Code requirements with BC-specific amendments including seismic and coastal provisions. Every EcoLog kit ships with two critical documents your municipality will require: a complete set of construction drawings and a Hot2000 energy model report demonstrating thermal performance under BC's energy efficiency requirements.

Additionally, a BC-licensed structural engineer reviews and stamps all drawings before they go to your local authority. This is essential because BC requires that structural designs be authenticated by a professional engineer registered in the province — out-of-province stamps alone won't be accepted. EcoLog handles the BC engineering review as part of the kit package, so you're not sourcing your own engineer or wondering if the plans will pass.

BC's seismic zone requirements are addressed in the engineering package — roof truss assemblies and structural connections are authenticated by a BC-licensed engineering professional, which is required with building permit applications across BC municipalities.
What is the total cost to build a home with an EcoLog kit in British Columbia?
Plan on $250 – $400 per square foot, all-in. That includes the EcoLog shell kit, delivery to your site, foundation, shell assembly, mechanical/electrical/plumbing, and interior and exterior finishing. Kit delivery is quoted separately based on your location. Owner-builders who do their own assembly and some finishing work can bring costs toward the lower end of that range. Land costs are separate.

For a typical 1,536 sq ft home (our Loon Lake plan with a kit price of $134,550), the total project budget at mid-range finishing runs approximately $384,000 – $491,000. The kit itself represents roughly 20–25% of total project cost — the remainder is foundation, trades, and finishing.

Why the range? The main variables are:
  • Foundation type: slab-on-grade is the most economical; a full walkout basement adds $40,000–$80,000 depending on site conditions.
  • Finishing level: standard fixtures vs. custom cabinetry, stone countertops, and designer hardware.
  • Site access: a rural property off a paved road is straightforward; a remote Interior or coastal lot adds 15–25%.
  • Services: properties already connected to utilities vs. those requiring well, septic, and power line extensions.
Why Western Hemlock instead of BC spruce or pine?
Western Hemlock is an engineering choice, not a supply-chain accident. EcoLog's system was designed around hemlock's specific properties over 30+ years of refinement.

Natural durability. Hemlock has naturally high tannin content that provides inherent resistance to insects and rot — without chemical pressure treatment. This is especially relevant in BC's wetter coastal and Interior climates, where untreated spruce and pine are more vulnerable to moisture-related decay.

Dimensional stability. Hemlock has a tighter grain structure and lower shrinkage coefficient than SPF (spruce-pine-fir). This means less settling, less checking, and more predictable long-term performance across BC's range of climates — from humid coastal conditions to Interior temperature swings.

Proven system. The 8"×8" hand-cut process, box-joint corner system, and chinking details were all developed specifically around hemlock's density, working characteristics, and moisture behaviour over 30+ years of builds. Switching species would require re-engineering the entire system.
Can I build this myself, or do I need a contractor?
EcoLog kits are DIY-friendly — if you have some basic construction knowledge, you can assemble the shell yourself. The box-joint corner system is designed so that components interlock in a logical stacking sequence. You don't need specialized log-building skills or scribe-fitting experience. If you can follow drawings, use a level, and operate basic tools, you can raise an EcoLog shell.

EcoLog provides detailed assembly documentation with every kit, and our team is available on-site, by phone, and by video call throughout the shell assembly process. Many owner-builders have successfully raised their first EcoLog shell with this support.

Prefer to hire it out? That works too. EcoLog maintains a growing network of contractors across BC who are familiar with the system. We'll connect you with builders in your area. But hiring a contractor is a choice, not a requirement.
How long does the entire process take — from order to move-in?
Foundation to occupancy is typically 6 to 10 months.

Kit production: 4–6 weeks from signed contract. Every wall log is hand-cut to plan at our facility. Once complete, delivery to your BC build site is arranged.

Foundation: 2–4 weeks (can overlap with kit production). Foundation work can be DIY or contracted out while EcoLog is producing the kit.

Shell assembly: 1–3 weeks. The kit components stack fast — walls, beams, trusses, and chinking installed in days to weeks, not months. Compare this to 3–6 months of on-site handcrafting for a full-scribe round-log home.

Trades and finishing: 3–6 months. This is the longest phase and depends on your finishing level and scope. Most BC buyers who order in winter are in their homes by the following fall.
How does this compare to manufactured cabin companies?
Different product, different category. Manufactured cabin companies build 2×6 framed walls with decorative log-profile siding applied to the exterior. The result looks like a log cabin from the outside, but the walls are conventional stud framing with insulation — the same construction as any subdivision home, with a cosmetic log overlay.

An EcoLog kit is solid timber, wall to wall. The 8"×8" hemlock timbers are the structure — they're not siding on a frame. You're standing inside real log walls. The thermal mass, the acoustic properties, the longevity, and the resale classification are all different from framed construction.

When it matters most: If you're building a four-season primary residence or a legacy recreational property that you want to last 80+ years and appraise as a genuine log home, solid timber is the material.
I love the look of handcrafted round-log homes but the prices are daunting. Is EcoLog a realistic alternative?
If your total project budget is under $500,000, a handcrafted round-log home is extremely difficult to achieve in BC. Full-scribe builders produce extraordinary homes — but the shell alone typically starts at $250,000 and routinely exceeds $400,000. Total project costs of $700,000–$1.2M are common.

EcoLog exists in the space between aspiration and budget reality. A 1,536 sq ft home built with the Loon Lake kit (3 bed, 2 bath, cathedral ceiling, single-wing layout) delivers a solid-timber log home at a total project cost of $384,000–$491,000 with mid-range BC finishing. The EcoLog kit itself is $134,550 — roughly half the typical handcrafted shell price for comparable square footage.

What you trade off: The organic, one-of-a-kind character of hand-scribed round logs. Every handcrafted home is unique — different log diameters, natural taper, saddle-notch joints with visible character. That aesthetic has its own beauty.

What you gain: Speed, predictable cost, and a contemporary-rustic aesthetic that pairs with modern interiors. Build schedule is months, not years. And you're in a real log home at a price point that lets you actually build it.
Can I customize a floor plan, or am I limited to what's shown?
Both standard and fully custom. EcoLog offers 20+ standard plans ranging from 576 sq ft cabins to 1,900 sq ft estate homes. Every standard plan can be modified — adding or removing rooms, adjusting dimensions, changing roof pitch, adding dormers, extending porches, or reconfiguring layouts.

Fully custom design is also available. EcoLog's design team works with you to create a plan from scratch within the 8"×8" timber system. Custom plans go through the same engineering process — Hot2000 energy model, BC-stamped structural review, construction drawings — and are priced based on square footage and complexity.

What modifications cost: Minor modifications to standard plans typically add $2,000–$5,000 to the kit price. Major redesigns or fully custom plans are quoted individually. Either way, you'll know the price before you commit.
