Yes — fully compliant, not "should be fine." Alberta uses the National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition. Every EcoLog kit ships with five sets of construction drawings, reviewed and stamped by an Alberta-licensed structural engineer, plus a Hot2000 energy model report for your permit application.

Truss authentication: Edmonton and other Alberta municipalities now require roof truss assemblies authenticated by an Alberta-licensed engineer with the permit application. EcoLog's Alberta drawings cover this — Ontario-stamped drawings alone would not be accepted.

Site-specific requirements (setbacks, septic, utility approvals) are handled through your local building department.

It depends on your project — which is exactly why we quote it individually. The EcoLog shell kit is one part of the total. The rest depends on your home size and layout, delivery distance and site access (remote or northern sites cost more to reach), foundation type — a walkout basement is one of the biggest variables — finishing level, and how much of the work you do yourself.

Because it performs better in Alberta's climate. Most log and timber products in Western Canada use spruce-pine-fir (SPF). Western Hemlock is the upgrade.

Natural durability. High natural tannin content gives inherent resistance to insects and rot — without chemical pressure treatment.

Dimensional stability. Tighter grain and lower shrinkage than SPF. In Alberta's dry air and big temperature swings — chinooks included — that means fewer gaps, less settling, and less maintenance over the life of the home.

Sustainably sourced. EcoLog uses FSC-certified timber.

EcoLog kits are DIY-friendly — if you have some basic construction knowledge, you can assemble the shell yourself. The box-joint corner system interlocks in a logical stacking sequence. No specialized log-building or scribe-fitting skills required.

Foundation to occupancy is typically 6 to 10 months.

Kit production: 4–6 weeks from signed contract. Every timber is hand-cut to plan.

Foundation: 2–4 weeks (can overlap with kit production).

Shell assembly: 1–3 weeks — walls, beams, trusses, and chinking go up in days to weeks, compared to 3–6 months of on-site handcrafting for a full-scribe round-log home.

Trades and finishing: 3–6 months. Alberta's build season is short — owners who order in winter are typically in their homes the following fall. The earlier you start planning, the better.

Yes — and solid timber has an advantage that R-value alone doesn't capture. The 8"×8" Western Hemlock walls, combined with 2" closed-cell foam insulation and the chinking system, are engineered to meet Alberta's energy requirements and documented in the Hot2000 report for your permit.

Thermal mass matters. Solid wood stores heat and releases it slowly, keeping interior temperatures stable through cold snaps and chinook swings.

Wood stoves and modern heat pumps both pair well with solid timber walls.

A panel cabin gives you a log look. EcoLog gives you a log home. Manufactured cabins use 2×6 framed walls with log-look siding — quick to assemble and the lowest entry point, but the log appearance is cosmetic.

An EcoLog kit is solid 8"×8" structural timber, floor to ridge. That means real log character inside and out, premium resale as a genuine log home, and far more design flexibility — while still going up in weeks, not months.

For many Alberta buyers, yes. Full-scribe builders produce extraordinary homes — but months of handcrafting per home put them in a very different budget and timeline category, especially in mountain and acreage markets.

How modifications are priced: Standard plans are the quickest route. Modifications and fully custom plans are quoted individually — either way, you'll know your kit price before you commit.
